You can glean some great ideas from movie wedding toasts, or for that matter, movie toasts regardless of the occasion.
If you’ve been asked to give a toast at a friend or family member’s wedding, you have been graced with a great honor. You have such power, such opportunity to delight your audience with a few choice words expressed in a few brief moments.
The impact of an excellent toast is profound and long lasting. The gathered guests will remember it and recount it for years to come.
You owe it to yourself, as well as the bride and groom, to prepare a toast that dazzles.
Meet Joe Black
Movies offer some great ideas. The 1998 film, “Meet Joe Black,” used this line:
“Love is passion, obsession, someone you can’t live without. If you don’t start with that, what are you going to end up with?”
Some of these great lines aren’t actually presented as a toast, but as part of the film’s dialogue. Anthony Hopkins offers this line as he talks to his daughter during a plane trip. This is a good line to use as a launching point to a toast. You could build on it in your toast by following it with:
“[Joe and Mary] start with that … and more. When I try to imagine what they’re going to end up with, well, I think it’s safe to say that the sky is the limit!”
Vertigo
Here’s a great line spoken by Kim Novak in the 1958 film “Vertigo:”
“Only one is a wanderer; two together are always going somewhere.”
Again, this is spoken dialogue, but you could easily build on it:
“I don’t know exactly where [Joe and Mary] will be going, but wherever it is, they’ll make it better. They are a force of nature, because the force behind them is Love. Let us all celebrate their journey of love by raising our glasses in a toast to a couple about to make the world a better place!”
Goodwill Hunting
“Goodwill Hunting” (1997) had a good line spoken by Robin William’s character:
”You’re not perfect, sport, and let me save you the suspense: this girl you’ve met, she’s not perfect either. But the question is whether or not you’re perfect for each other.”
Your follow up would go something like this:
“Look at them, ladies and gentlemen, is there any question that these two wonderful people aren’t perfect for each other? No, there is no question, because their relationship has been built on a foundation of faith, hope, and charity. For all their flaws, which it is safe to say are few, they are givers, not takers. The love they will pour out on each other will overflow, nourishing everyone they encounter.”
The Count of Monte Cristo
Here’s one more, a great toast from “The Count of Monte Cristo.” The Count, portrayed by Jim Caviezel, gives a birthday toast to the son of his arch enemy. Again, not a wedding toast. But this beautiful piece of writing reveals the full power of a toast:
“Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes. You must look into that storm and shout as you did in Rome: ‘Do your worst, for I will do mine!’ Then the Fates will know you as a man.”
Don’t just watch this scene. Watch the full movie. It is truly memorable.
