Dad’s wedding toast is very funny

The father of the bride wedding toast can easily go awry. The biggest risk is the dad who goes on and on and on waxing about his daughter’s many virtues. This is fine up to a point, but can grow old quickly.

Some dads understandably have trouble controlling their emotions, which can lead to an uneven presentation of the father of the bride wedding toast.

The dad in the video above delivers a very funny story with these elements:

  1. Shocking revelation: “Many of you don’t know this, but a few years ago, Christa was almost married.” Even Christa was shocked at the statement. It took her an instant to realize where Dad was going with the story.
  2. Family anecdote. The Dad recalls a family trip to Europe a number of years earlier.
  3. Funny request. A Turkish man took note of the Dad’s pretty daughter and asked, “how many camels for your daughter?” Needless to say, the guests were cracking up at such an unusual request by American standards.
  4. Funny response. The father really got the guests going when he asked, “Well, how many camels do you have?”
  5. Punchline. And then he drove it home with a great punchline: “When we got back to our room, I did what any other father would do and Googled, ‘how many camels, on average, does a father get for his daughter?’ ”

Controlled delivery

Notice the Dad’s controlled delivery. He had his toast scripted, which helps emotive dads keep their emotions in check. His dry delivery enhanced the joke’s impact. And it only took a minute.

The YouTube video above doesn’t give us the rest of this dad’s toast. But he would have delivered a very satisfying toast had he simply ended it with something like this:

“In fact, Christ’a value is incalculable. Far more than two camels … or even all the gold in Fort Knox. She has brought nothing but joy to her mom and me. ‘John’, I can promise she will do the same for you. Welcome to the family! Would everyone join me in raising their glasses in a toast to Christa and John.”

The key to a good wedding toast: make them laugh and make them cry. The toast above provides a solid example on how to use humor when making a wedding toast, and how easy it is to make it short and sweet.
