How long should wedding toasts take?

How many weddings have you attended in the past five years? If you’ve even averaged a wedding a year, you’ve probably encountered wedding toasts that go on and on and on.

Lengthy wedding toasts get boring and disrupt the flow of your celebration. That’s why we blog on the subject frequently.

We’ve seen combined wedding toasts than can go on an hour. Way too long!

The Knot suggests a combined ten to fifteen minutes. Designated toasters should keep their remarks from three to five minutes each. We think two to three minutes is even better.

You should limit toasters to just three or four, and again, they should be designated by the wedding couple.

A woman weighed in on Reddit weddings with an interesting insight:

“Maybe an unpopular opinion but I think the length of speeches should be inversely proportional to the guest count – the smaller the wedding the longer they can be. The bigger the wedding, the more people that aren’t in your immediate circle and don’t care to listen to you speak longer than 2 minutes, especially if you aren’t a seasoned public speaker. The speeches are usually the worst part of a wedding. Most of the things said in them make more sense to be shared in the intimacy of the rehearsal dinner.”

The speeches don’t have to be the worst part of the evening. Even mediocre toasts are palatable if they’re brief. Don’t let them take over your reception, when your guests are itching to hit the dance floor.
