The iconic “Seinfeld” television show molded the American culture during its nine season run from 1989 through 1998. Thirty million people tuned in each week to watch the antics of Jerry Seinfeld and his friends.
Millions more watch it each week on YouTube, Netflix, and other streaming platforms. Jerry Seinfeld’s take on love, marriage, fatherhood, and the differences between men and women are timelessly funny. His friend, Kramer, offers up his own unique perspective on marriage in the clip above.
Here’s the hilarious transcript:”
“Marriage? Family? They’re prisons! Man-made prisons! You’re doing time. You get up in the morning, and she’s there. You go to sleep at night, and she’s there. It’s like you gotta ask permission to use the bathroom… ‘Is it all right if I use the bathroom now?’ And you can forget about watching TV while you’re eating. You know why? Because it’s ‘dinner time!’ And do you know what you do at dinner? You talk about your day! ‘How was your day today? Did you have a good day or a bad day? What kind of day was it?’ It’s sad, Jerry. It’s a sad state of affairs!”
Jerry’s own takes are pretty funny:
“I didn’t know every day I would be discussing the tone of my voice with my wife. I thought it was a marriage. Apparently, it’s a musical.”
“Being a good husband is like being a good stand-up comic – you need ten years before you can even call yourself a beginner.”
Who can forget his friend, George’s, flawed engagement (below)?
Seinfeld compared wedding to an investment:
“Like any major investment, you sign a marriage contract. Here’s your person. If you’re a man, the bride’s family pays for the wedding. That’s like getting cash back. Till death do us part. That’s the extended warranty program. And you give her the ring. That’s the keys. You slide it on, start him up. But you gotta try and make it work, because remember: Your value drops twenty percent the minute you drive each other off the lot.”
In fact, marriage IS an investment as we’ve written before. It’s an investment in more happiness in life, better health, longer lifespan, more wealth, and happier children. Study after study proves the point, regardless of what the comedians have to say on the subject.
Comedians like Jerry Seinfeld poke fun at the human foibles of men and women in relationships. The thing is, marriage is the best thing that happens to most of us. Accordingly, it is THE life event we celebrate the most.
