If you’re single and in a relationship, you’ve probably asked yourself, “why should I get married?” The obvious, quick response is love. You’re in love, which is the foundation of marriage. The subject goes even deeper.
This blog has considered the question on many occasions. For example, married couples fare better financially than their non-married counterparts. Both partners live healthier, happier lives. Their children fare better.
None of the above is debatable. Data confirms the marriage advantage time and time again.
But as good as those reasons appear, they are not why people get married.
Some marry because they want to start a family. Marriage is a sacrament in many religions. Some marry to avoid loneliness.
The question, “why do you think people get married” was posed in a 2004 movie, “Shall We Dance?”.
Susan Sarandon’s character offers up an interesting response to the question. You can watch it above. And here is the script of the exchange between Sarandon’s character, Beverly, and a private detective she hired to tail her husband to see if he’s cheating on her (he’s not):
“Why do you think people get married?”
“Passion.”
“No.”
“Because I would have taken you for a romantic. Why then?”
“Because we need a witness to our lives.
“There are a billion people on this planet, so what does one life really mean?
“But in a marriage, you’re promising to care about everything: the good things; the bad things; the terrible things; the mundane things. All of it. All the time. Every day.
“You’re saying: ‘your life will not go unnoticed, because I will notice it.
“ ‘Your life will not go unwitnessed, because I will be your witness.’
“You can quote me on that, if you’d like.”
“Sure I will.”
Thought-provoking, isn’t it?
