The most danceable first dance song ever?

Danceable

It’s hard to name the most danceable first dance song ever. There are many good ones, and we have one in mind. What prompted this blogpost was an interesting Reddit post that noticed a decline in danceability in popular music.

The writer observes:

“Since the 2000s though, more specifically since like 2010 or so, it seems to have fallen off. And I mean before the pandemic too. Music about partying, just in general, just doesn’t seem to be big anymore, let alone dancing. I remember reading that youth aren’t really going to clubs or parties much at all anymore (this was like 2018, before the pandemic), or even drinking or doing drugs as much either, and it just sort of made me think that maybe danceability in popular music was largely a fad of boomers/genx/millennials and wasn’t really destined to last.”

The comments were interesting. One guy said he doesn’t like going out dancing anymore with the proliferation of cell phones that can catch you in awkward moments on the dance floor.

Another lamented the canned rhythm tracks used in contemporary music. And yet another wondered if “danceability in popular music was a fad of boomers/genx/millennials and wasn’t really destined to last.”

We don’t think so.

Nonetheless, there is a song that came out when Boomers were just kids that never goes away. We think that “L-O-V-E” is perhaps the most danceable first dance song ever, because the two-step beat is so easy to dance to.

It pops up on YouTube all the time with some great dance routines, like this one:

Another catchy dance routine

An amateur couple tries it out

This couple learned the routine by watching the previous video.

The song is short and catchy, crooned by the timeless Nat King Cole. The lyrics by Milt Gabler, complemented by Bert Kaempfert’s bouncy music are perfect for your first dance song.

The Kaempfert/Gabler collaboration shines with one of the catchiest melodies you’ll ever want to hear. The spare lyric is simply delightful. And few people have ever sung a love song better than Nat King Cole.

So, if you’re looking for a song that is very easy to dance to, spend a little time on the dance floor with your honey and see what you think of “L-O-V-E.”
