Country music Super Bowl snub

By February 19, 2024Dance

top Reba McEntire wedding songsHave you notice the absence of country music stars from the Super Bowl halftime shows? You have to go all the way back to 2003 when Shania Twain performed to see country music showcased at television’s biggest event. And yet next to Rock, Country is the US’s most popular music genre. As a sop to country fans, the Super Bowl often lets country stars perform the National Anthem. This year, it was Reba McEntire. Seems like the perfect opportunity to look at the best Reba McEntire wedding songs.

She has a bunch of them.

Ms. McEntire has had an incredible career, selling 75 million records and landing 25 singles on country’s #1 spot (tenth best of all time!). By contrast, Elton John has ‘only’ had nine #1 singles on Billboard’s Top 100 list (a different chart, but you get the idea).

“I Keep On Lovin’ You”

One of her best love songs has got to be “I Keep On Lovin’ You.” This is an adult love song in that it acknowledges that human relationships are always imperfect, that lovers get ticked with each other, and that “love takes the patience of Job.” This song explains what marriage is all about: commitment. “I keep on lovin’ you” in good times and in bad.

You won’t go wrong with this song as your first dance song:

“Forever Love”

Reba builds on the love theme in her #4 hit song, “Forever Love,” which was the basis of a 1998 television movie of the same name. The song taps into a love-at-first-sight theme, which can be so moving, with these words:

“The first time I laid eyes on you I knew

We’d spend this life side by side.”

“I’ve Waited All My Life For You”

It’s hard to top this song for a first dance. Reba co-wrote it herself (with Liz Hengber), but never released it as a single. Nonetheless, her fans love it, and so will you, especially if you’re a post-thirties couple who have taken your time finding the right life partner. These lyrics say it all:

“So here it is, all the love

That I’ve saved for a lifetime,

Never touched, never crushed,

and never used.”
