The day-after wedding brunch is extremely popular these days. It allows out-of-town guests an opportunity to spend a little more time with family and friends they haven’t seen for awhile, without all of the distractions (fun!) that take place during a wedding ceremony and reception.
It also allows the couple themselves to mingle in a more meaningful and relaxed way with friends and family who came in from out of town to help celebrate their wedding.
But, depending on where you have them, they can easily cost a few thousand dollars … even more for full restaurant buffet and plated meals. They are a wonderful way to bring a wedding weekend to a close, but the question is: who foots the bill?
A writer to Reddit presented her dilemma about this growing custom:
“My future MIL told me it’s pretty customary to have a day after brunch for guests. I’ve definitely heard of this, but on top of other costs it seems unnecessary. I totally get the idea of throwing it to thank everyone for coming but … the day after my wedding I just want all those obligations to go away lol! Plus, financially it’s just overwhelming. It doesn’t help that I’ve been looking at floral quotes the same day as this topic was brought up. Just curious what others have done, if it’s necessary, and more cost effective options?
My future MIL was kind of implying that my parents should be doing this, but my family is much less financially secure (to put it mildly), so even if my parents contribute a small amount, the majority would fall on us. Ahh the joys of wedding planning.”
The solution is easy. The host pays for the day-after wedding brunch. If the future mother-in-law wants a day-after wedding brunch, she can pick up the tab.
The bride (or groom) can simply say:
“We can’t afford it, nor can my parents. It’s a lovely idea, and we’d love to see it happen, but certainly understand if it doesn’t fit your budget either.”
