Matt Hansen emerged as a force of nature in the world of singer/songwriters just last year. The 26 year old native Californian is something of a male version of Taylor Swift, in that he writes marvelous break up songs with searing, passionate precision.
He’s been there. His songs convey honesty, attracting a growing audience without the leverage of a record label. So when he releases an actual love song, like “Yellowstone (holding you),” you can’t help but be uplifted by its purity.
It’s a love song for this age (above). It begins with reference to apocalyptic rumors, you know the type of fake reports showing up on social media all the time, and moves into his musings on what he’ll do if it comes: hold onto the love of his life. He offers up an affecting lyric:

His poetic verses invoke the great lyrics of Ira Gershwin from his classic love song,
“Love is Here to Stay”:

Three million plus fans follow him on Tik Tok. Sixty-five million liked his postings. On Spotify, he enjoys nearly six million monthly visitors, with a net total of over 1 billion (with a ‘B’!) streams.
To put that in perspective, artists earn about $3000 to $5000 for each million streams, which means Mr. Hansen has earned $3 to $5 million dollars by releasing his original content on Spotify without the benefit of a record label. Not bad!
