Wedding planning begins with locking in a date. Be sure to avoid wedding blackout dates, you know, those dates where conflicts may affect who can attend.
For example, it might not be a good idea to plan your wedding on Super Sunday. The Super Bowl is the highest rated television event of the year. According to the NFL, 208 million people viewed it in the U.S. alone. That’s something like two-thirds of the entire country! You may have trouble prying friends and families away from the Super Bowl to attend your wedding.
Check your personal calendar
Think ahead and carefully scrutinize your personal calendar. Any reunions coming up in the next couple of years? How about business events, expos, conventions? Here’s a biggie: any other family members or friends getting married? You might want to space your date out away from theirs if there is a fair amount of guest overlap between the two affairs.
If you have a wide range of multi-cultural friends and family, check out religious holidays or important cultural holidays that may impact your date.
Check national holidays
Five U.S. holidays fall on Mondays, including:
- Martin Luther King Day
- Presidents’ Day
- Memorial Day
- Labor Day
- Columbus Day
Presidents’ Day and Columbus Day are not big factors in considering wedding blackout dates, as most people don’t get the day off, unless they work for the government.
However, the other three do need your consideration, as many people plan a long weekend getaway knowing they have Monday off.
Other obvious wedding blackout dates include Thanksgiving and Christmas.
What about New Year’s Eve or Day? People like to party on New Year’s Eve, so that is an interesting possibility. But New Year’s Day features a lot of attractive football games, the perfect balm for hungover New Year’s Eve partygoers.
Add it to your wedding blackout days.
If you’re considering a Sunday event, avoid Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Easter.
What about Halloween?
And finally, there’s Halloween. It’s become quite a party night. And some locales embrace ‘beggars night’ and ‘trick or treat’ events. Probably best to ignore it, unless you’d like to plan a fun, themed event.
Wedding blackout dates are one of the most boring wedding planning details to consider. You’ll be glad that you did, though, when the most important people in your life show up for the happiest day in your life: your wedding day.
