Consider Broadway songs for your first dance

By November 15, 2021Dance

Music is a wonderful thing. Contemporary couples have access to a staggering library of enticing songs for their first wedding dance. Sometimes we forget that certain categories of songs offer tremendous options, such as great Broadway songs.

If you’re looking for passion, try a Stephen Sondheim song from his aptly named 1994 musical, “Passion.” The song is called “Loving You,” and it’s a beauty. They lyrics are about as powerful as they get, with this simple theme:

“Loving you

Is not a choice

It’s who I am.”

Songstress, Melissa Errico, can barely get through the song in her performance below. The lyrics are that moving:

The legendary songwriting duo of Lerner & Loewe captured the excitement of young love in a beauty of a song from My Fair Lady. “On the Street Where You Live” truly captures the vibe with these great lyrics, backed by a bouncy tune:

People stop and stare, they don’t bother me

For there’s nowhere else on earth that I would rather be

Let the time go by, I won’t care

If I can be here on the street where you live.

Rodgers & Hammerstein wrote a beautiful love song called “Ten Minutes Ago” from their musical, “Cinderella:”

“Ten minutes ago I saw you

You looked up as I came thorough the door

My head started reeling

You gave me the feeling the room had no ceiling or floor.”

Richard Rodgers wrote music to another classic Broadway song perfect for your first dance, “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered.” However, lyrics for this great melody were written by rhyming wizard, Lorenz Hart. Here’s a sample:

“I’m wild again

Beguiled again

A simpering, whimpering child again

Bewitched, bothered and bewildered am I.”

Listen to Barbra Streisand’s expressive take on this classic:

Finally, everyone knows and loves The Lion King’s great love song, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” with music by Sir Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice. The lyrics are so well known, that your guests will probably want to sing along:

And can you feel the love tonight? (Tonight)

How it’s laid to rest?

It’s enough to make kings and vagabonds

Believe the very best.

Here’s a fresh take on the song, as performed by Pentatonix:
