One of our favorite Christmas songs is an ancient Irish carol written at least 5 centuries ago called, “The Wexford Carol.” Alison Krauss and cellist Yo Yo Ma collaborated (above) to create the essential version of this masterpiece, characterized as it is by a folk/bluegrass vibe. It got us thinking about Alison Krauss love songs.
Many don’t know her impressive bio. Only one female artist (Beyoncé) has won more Grammy Awards than Krauss’ 27 awards (out of 46 nominations). She sings with a band called Union Station, performing beautifully-crafted country/folk/bluegrass songs which feature Krauss on vocals and fiddle.
“When You Say Nothing At All”
Perhaps her best love song is “When You Say Nothing,” recorded in 1999 and written by the Irish singer/songwriter, Ronan Keating. The title sets the stage for lyrics that express the profundity of love. Sometimes words aren’t even needed:
“It’s amazing how you can speak right to my heart,
Without saying a word, you can light up the dark.
Try as I may, I can never explain
What I hear when you don’t say a thing.”
This is a great song for a wedding, one of her top-charting songs.
“Looking In the Eyes of Love”
Krauss recorded another beautiful love song in 1997, “Looking in the Eyes of Love,” written by Kostas Lazarides and Tricia Walker. The song’s theme is perfect for your first wedding dance:
“Looking in the eyes of love I can see forever,
I can see you and me walking in this old world together.”
Alison Krauss love songs are exceptional because of her extraordinary, angelic voice. Whether she’s singing a Christmas song or a love song, she takes you on a musical journey you don’t want to end.
