Weddings are for families

Friends gathered on a warm summer evening. The conversation took an odd turn when someone posed a hypothetical question: if you were locked away in a Siberian prison camp for twenty years, what would be the first thing you’d want to do when you got out?

The common response was: be reunited with my family.

The question comes to mind in reference to some sad letters sent to various advice columnists.

In one letter, a family said they’d disown a son if he married outside their religious faith. He and his girlfriend ended up getting secretly married and didn’t even tell the bride’s parents. When the bride’s parents eventually found out, her mother was livid for not being invited to the ceremony. Out of spite, she wanted nothing to do with her daughter.

In another, a woman’s brother said some horrible things about her. Out of hurt and anger, she didn’t want to attend his upcoming second marriage.

Families are the building blocks of society

This blog acknowledges that family dynamics can be complicated. By the same token, the family unit is the essential building block of civilization.

For people of just about any religious faith, they see the family as a creation of God and the path to teaching us how to love one another.

But even for the non-religious, family is supposed to provide warmth, security, and a sense of belonging.

This is a wedding blog We believe that we live to celebrate, and that the ultimate event in life to celebrate is marriage. Even more, wedding celebrations have the power to unite people around the most powerful force in the universe: love. Weddings are for families.
