How to give to give a whimsical wedding toast

By May 23, 2022Toasting

whimsical wedding toastHow many wedding toasts have you heard? I promise, you haven’t heard as many as us. We’ve heard thousands! We’ve observed that wedding guests love a whimsical wedding toast.

So, if you’ve been honored to give a wedding toast in an upcoming wedding, how can you inject some wit and fun into your toast and put a smile on everyone’s face?

It’s not that hard. Search engines can lead you to some pretty funny wedding quotes down through the ages.  You’ll note that most tend to be sarcastic.

That’s okay. Your job is to turn something whimsical into something warm and tender, worthy of the occasion.

An example …

For example, you might say something like this:

“My name is [your name], brother of [groom’s name]. I am so honored to have the opportunity of offering a wedding toast to this wonderful couple.

I’ve always been a fan of the movie director, Clint Eastwood. He was once quoted as saying, “Marriages are made in heaven. But so again, so are thunder and lightening.”

However, I’m not sure if Clint is the best person to quote on marriage, if you’ve every read his bio. You see, to him, thunder and lightening are bad things in a marriage.

But when I think of [groom] and [bride], well, it’s pretty safe to say that lightening struck twice and knocked them into each other’s arms.

Someone in heaven knew what he was doing when he launched a couple of lightening bolts in their direction, because their love lights up a room.

You’ve seen it. I know you’ve felt if you’ve spent anytime with them as a couple.

Clint Eastwood knows, as we all do, that we’re going to encounter thunderstorms in life. But storms are easier to handle when we face them together in love and charity. Love is sacrificial, and that surely describes the depth of your marriage union.

So as I contemplate the beautiful life you two are about to experience together, I can’t help but see a sunny forecast on the horizon.

As Clint Eastwood said in his iconic role as Dirty Harry, “Make my day.” [Grooms name], [bride’s name] I can safely say that you have ‘made my day,’ and that of every person in attendance on this auspicious occasion, when you said ‘I do.’

Ladies and gentlemen, would you raise your glass and join me in honoring Mr. and Mrs. [couple’s name]!”

Whimsy gets the guests’ attention. Find a quote to use as a launching point. But then shift gears and turn sentimental by playing off the quote. It’s not hard, and it doesn’t have to take long.
