TikTok wedding controversy

By August 19, 2024Culture

TikTok wedding controversyA couple recently posted a set of ‘rules’ to which their guests must adhere, stirring up a TikTok wedding controversy.

Here are their 4 rules:

  1. MY dj will not take YOUR song requests. Just go to the club if you want your songs played.
  2. DO NOT ask MY photographer for pictures of you. I did not pay 10,000s of dollars for random portraits.
  3. No plus one. I’m not stressing and paying for strangers I’ve never met.
  4. NO ALCOHOL. I want my guests to actually remember this day.

Cons

Most people reacted negatively to the TikTok rules. Here are a few of these cons:

  • Enjoy your wedding, I’m busy that day.
  • I think I’ll skip it.
  • In Ireland if u say no alcohol there’d by no wedding.
  • I was onboard until the last one.

Pros

Here are a few pros:

  • It’s their wedding, their rules. Ya’ll don’t need to go to it.
  • I absolutely agree with these rules. Had the same rules when celebrating my wedding and everyone was happy …

One comment reflects the views of most couples planning their wedding:

“When the wedding ceremony is over, I consider that the party is a time for the guests and not for me. Otherwise, there’s no point in inviting people if it means they won’t have fun.”

Weddings are celebrations, and most couples in our experience really think about showing their guests a good time.

As you read the 4 rules above, you’ll note how self-centered they are written: “my dj” … “MY photographer” … “my guests.”

There’s an easier way

It seems all of this could easily be handled without fanfare by simply not saying anything in advance.

As a company specializing in providing wedding entertainment for Columbus couples, we’ll take requests only with the permission of our clients. Some of the couples with whom we work do not want us to take requests for a variety of reasons. They might have a certain vibe they wish to maintain. Or they don’t want to be put in a situation where a few guests ‘hi-jack’ the music with one request after another.

In these situations, we simply tell your guests that the host couple have a curated list of songs they want us to stick with.

By contrast, some couples are flexible and more open to us taking requests. Don’t make wedding planning more complicated by stirring up a TikTok wedding controversy.

Same with the rest of the ‘rules.’ Let the photographer handle it. Deal individually with guests who want to bring a ‘plus one.’

An aggressive rule?

The bride stated the last rule on booz rather aggressively, don’t you think?

Some couples express legitimate reasons for not wanting alcohol at their event. It might be a limited budget. Could be religious reasons. Maybe alcoholism runs in their family.

But we’ve never heard a couple refuse to provide alcohol at a wedding as a club to make guests remember their wedding. It seems that there are easier ways to handle the situation, such as a set cut-off time for the bar.

The majority of reactions to the TikTok wedding controversy were negative towards the bride’s draconian set of rules.

Weddings are supposed to be fun, not bogged down by rules and regulations. If you’re looking for unfettered fun for your event, check us out, Columbus Pro DJs, the wedding entertainment specialists. Nothing controversial about that.
