Do you have to invite shower attendees to your wedding?

wedding shower etiquette

What is wedding shower etiquette when it comes to planning your wedding guest list? Do you HAVE to invite someone to your wedding IF you invited them to a wedding shower?

The Knot consulted with a variety of wedding etiquette experts who acknowledge that as a rule of thumb, this is rude. They write:

”Those who have been invited to a bridal shower but not the actual wedding may be confused, and rightfully so. To set the record straight on what this actually means and if it’s rude (spoiler alert: YES, for the most part.)”

Here’s the thing: you don’t want to come across as a ‘money-grab’ sort of couple. Be careful. For example, a woman wrote to Miss Manners that she inadvertently invited ten people to a wedding shower who ultimately didn’t “make the cut” when it came to finalizing the actual wedding guest list.

She recognized how hurtful this could be when these people discovered they didn’t make the cut. In light of this unpleasant situation, she wondered if she  should contact them and let them know not to bring a gift, and avoid the money-grab impression that would surely linger.

Miss Manners didn’t like it this idea at all:

There is no polite way to say, “When we trimmed our guest list, you were the people we decided we could do without. But don’t worry: We won’t charge you admission to the shower.”

Rather she said to make cuts in the flower budget or dinner menu to accommodate them on the guest list.

Notice what she didn’t suggest cutting? The entertainment! Entertainment makes the event.
