Are wedding crashers really a thing? Occasionally, yes, they are.
A recent bride wrote to an advice columnist lamenting the wedding crashers at her wedding:
“I got married recently, and while the day was beautiful overall, a few unexpected guests showed up — actual wedding crashers!
At first, I thought maybe they were distant friends of my husband’s, but it became obvious they didn’t know anyone. They ate, drank and even joined us on the dance floor like they belonged there.
By the time we realized what was happening, they had already helped themselves to food, drinks and favors meant for our guests.
I’m still upset thinking about how they took advantage of such a special day. Part of me feels silly for caring since the wedding was otherwise amazing, but another part of me feels disrespected.”
Quick advice: forget about it, because you can’t do anything about it at this point. You’re out a few bucks. You’ve got a great story to tell.
For future couples, here are a few steps you can take if you’re concerned about wedding crashers:
- Keep your wedding website password-protected. Send invited guests the password.
- Don’t do RSVPs on your website.
- Provide a guest list to your wedding planner, friend or venue staff member to check off names as people enter the reception.
- If you’re really concerned, alert other members of the wedding party and family members to keep an eye out for the moochers.
When you catch them, ask the wedding planner, venue manager, or trusted family member to discreetly ask them to leave. That should take care of it.
If by some fluke they refuse to leave, call the venue’s security or the cops. Problem solved.
