We stumbled across an interesting article on yahoo!Life. They reported on an odd trend in the world of photography. It seems sales for vintage cameras have spiked 1600%, and the reason is weddings.

Brittney Green-Asquith, who is an auction coordinator at Vintage Cash Cow, explained the wedding connection to the trend:

“There’s been an astonishing increase in demand for retro cameras in recent months, driven largely by couples looking to remember their special day with a touch of nostalgia. The appeal of timeless images especially resonates with brides and grooms who want their photos to stand out. Undoubtedly spurred on by a growing appreciation across the board for all things vintage, the trend is a great example of old meeting new to create something truly special.”

Digital photography overwhelmed old-fashioned ‘analog’ photography because of the significant advantages it offers. Rank amateurs can generate high-quality images instantly and affordably with light-weight cameras (like your smart phone). A great tool for taking candid pics at parties and vacations.

So, are images printed from film any different than digital images? Yes, they can be, as you can see in the image above, as demonstrated by the darkroom.com.

The image on the left was shot with a film camera, a Canon EOS 3 and printed on Velvia 50 film.

The image on the right used a full-frame Canon 6D.

Both cameras took the shot using the same settings.

Advantages

They said film photography offers these advantages.

  • “With a higher dynamic range, film is better at capturing white’s and blacks’ details and can’t be replicated with digital cameras. Also, film can capture subtle details lost in digital photography.

  • Film captures photos at higher resolution than most digital cameras.

  • Film is more forgiving of minor focusing issues and exposure problems.”

They made an interesting observation that photographers using film have to plan their shots more carefully. Film is limited, shots are expensive, encouraging a photographer’s artistry to shine through.

By contrast, digital photographers “tend to take pictures first and think later.” You can see, there are pros and cons to both approaches.

As you consider your wedding photography, talk to your photographer about the ‘look’ you want with your pics. Most can give you want you want without the expense of vintage cameras.

When it comes to your wedding entertainment, Columbus Pro DJs doesn’t offer ‘vintage’ sound systems, because our high end modern equipment is so much better than anything from yesteryear. However, we can play the timeless, vintage songs from previous eras if that is your style. Or we can play today’s hits. Either way, it’s going to sound awesome. Check us out!
