Wedding celebrations are simple. People want to get up and dance! The wedding DJ needs to be a great MC who knows how to motivate guests and help them overcome inhibitions. Everyone has a great time when the dance floor gets packed.
Interestingly, there have been no shortage of songs built around the words ‘get up and dance’, or some variation of the theme.
“Shut Up and Dance”
Walk the Moon begins our list from their 2014 hit, “Shut Up and Dance” (above). Pretty simple idea, isn’t it! The lyrics tell us:
“She said, ‘Shut up and dance with me’
This woman is my destiny,
She said, ‘Ooh-hoo,
Shut up and dance with me.”
Great first dance song!
The decade of the 1970s cranked out no shortage of ‘get up and dance songs.
The Doors
The Doors offered up this 1972 version, with lyrics like these:
“Oh people, get up and dance,
The new days coming’, it’s the end of a chance.
No need to worry, no need to hide,
Everybody is on the same side.
Oh people, get up and dance.”
Elton John
Elton got his licks in with his 1976 single, “Bite Your Lip, Get Up and Dance.”
The live recording above was made in 2004. As usual, Bernie Taupin’s lyrics make the song especially memorable:
“Strobe light on the funky feet,
Soul children in the disco heat,
Top dog, top cat,
Move that muscle and shake that fat.
Bite your lip, ooh, get up, get up and dance.”
T.K. Disco
T.K. Disco offered their version of “Get Up Dance” with the cut above, recorded in 1979.
