Top bachelor party movies

By August 14, 2023Culture

We discussed dumb bachelor party ideas in a previous blogpost. So many dumb ideas abound when it comes to this ritual, that Hollywood has devoted considerable energy to producing scores of bachelor party movies. Here are a few of the best.

The Hangover

This 2009 comedy was a smash hit, generating close to half a billion dollars at the box office. It spawned two sequels which were also financially, if not critically, successful. The premise: a bachelor party in Vegas creates chaos when participants over imbibe. The next day, one participant is missing; one is missing a tooth; a bengal tiger is found in the bathroom … and a baby is in the closet.

The antics that follow delighted viewers who flocked to this film.

Bachelor Party

This 1984 comedy stars Tom Hanks in one of his earliest roles. The premise is pretty straight forward. Hanks gets engaged, his future father-in-law isn’t happy about the pending union and tries to use the bachelor party as an opportunity break up the engagement.

Very Bad Things

This 1998 movie isn’t for everyone. It’s a very dark comedy about a bachelor party-gone-wrong, complete with the death of a stripper/prostitute. This film will instill the fear of God in men who yearn for a raunchy bachelor party.

How to Murder Your Wife

The most delightful film on this list! Made in 1965, it stars the late-great Jack Lemmon as a renown cartoonist who attends a bachelor party and wakes up in bed the next day with a beautiful, naked blonde (the fetching Verna Lisi) lying next to him (all handled with discretion by the director). He discovers, to his horror, that they were married the night before, although he has no recollection of the event.

To compound the comedic potential of the film, his wife speaks no English, and she adores him. With his committed bachelor lifestyle in shambles, Lemmon’s character faces decisions on what to do, ultimately leading him to the courtroom where he is charged with murdering his wife.

This is a wildly entertaining film, devoid of raunch and vulgarity, something which can’t be said about some of the other films listed in this blogpost.

The Best Man

Infidelities and double standards emerge among friends and lovers on the eve of a wedding. This 1999 movie has it all: romance, drama, comedy.

The Best Man Holiday

A sequel of sorts to The Best Man, here’s what reviewer, Odie Henderson, had to say about it:

“The Best Man Holiday” has the potential to become a staple of Christmastime movie watching in the ‘hood. Writer-director Malcolm D. Lee reunites the cast from his 1999 film, “The Best Man,” extending their stories and filling in blanks left in the original. While not as pointed as its 1999 predecessor, this sequel has a richer emotional palette. Lee raises the stakes on characters that fans have cradled to their bosoms, adding a surprising amount of tragedy. He overdoes it, but “The Best Man Holiday” could still teach Tyler Perry lessons on how to move from overwhelming sadness to broad comedy.
