What would you do in this situation?

By August 12, 2024Culture

betrayalMy goodness how human relationships can become so messy! A Reddit user shared a remarkable story of betrayal before her wedding. Here’s the recap.

Alison was engaged to a guy for two years. Three months before the wedding, she discovers he was cheating on her, so she immediately breaks it off.

Her ex (Mike) moved away, and Alison moves on with her life.

Time passes.

Alison tells what happened next:

“I get a call from my younger sister ‘Lily’ saying she has exciting news and wants me to come over to our parents’ house for dinner to share it. When I arrived, Lily and my parents were all smiles, and she drops the bombshell: She’s engaged. To Mike. My head was spinning. I felt like I was going to pass out.”

Everyone knew about it

To compound the growing family betrayal, Lily had been secretly dating Mike for the past year, and the parents knew about it! As if that weren’t enough, not only did they exert pressure on Alison to attend the wedding, Lily wanted Alison to be her maid of honor!

Let us pause here. What would YOU do in this situation? As you’d probably guess, Reddit users overwhelmingly supported Alison’s decision to not attend the wedding, despite enormous pressure. She feels the betrayal not only from Mike, but from her sister and her parents, too.

Could this betrayal have been avoided?

This is a tough situation to be in, one best avoided. Could it have been avoided? Yes.

Anyone with an iota of compassion and sensitivity understands that, of course, Alison would be shaken by this turn of events. Lily should have addressed the issue head on before the relationship even got started.

The parents should have insisted that Lily come clean early-on rather than participate in the betrayal.

They didn’t.

So how do they move forward from here? It seems clear that they’ve got to back off Alison and let the passage of time begin what will likely be a slow healing process. They need to understand her need to excuse herself from attending a wedding that would be so painful and humiliating.

If Alison is able to rise above it all and attend as a guest, more power to her. But she shouldn’t be expected to at the threat of being “cut off” financially, as apparently she was.

Betrayal is a bitter pill to swallow.
