What is Love?

By December 16, 2024Culture

We stumbled on to a delightful YouTube video featuring Coldplay’s Chris Martin and the legendary entertainer, Dick Van Dyke. During the course of the video (above), Mr. Van Dyke is asked that timeless question, “what is love?”

Before we give you his answer, younger readers of this blog may wonder, ‘who is Dick Van Dyke?” It’s a fair question, as the man is 98 years old. His impressive resumé was built in the 60s thru the 90s, although he’ll occasionally pop up on  shows like The Simpsons, The Masked Singer, and Jimmy Kimmel Live! even today.

He was the star of the eponymous 1960s classic tv series, “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” while making appearances on a wide range of shows in the decades since. His performance in the Disney movie “Mary Poppins” was certainly one of his finest.

Academy Award winning director/screen writer, Spike Jonze, got Van Dyke together with Coldplay’s Chris Martin to shoot the short, little movie above. Martin sings Coldplay’s new love song, “All My Love,” with Van Dyke occasionally joining in.

Someone asked Dick Van Dyke, “what is love?” to which he replied,

“Boy, they’ve been attacking that question for centuries. I don’t know. It certainly is a feeling of caring about the welfare and the life of the other person as much as you care for yourself.”

Well said by Van Dyke, who taught Sunday school in his Presbyterian church for many years. The great philosopher, Thomas Aquinas, would agree, as he defined love thusly,

“Love is to will the good of the other for the sake of the other.”

Martin’s lyrics from the song touch on similar themes:

“Whether it rains or pours, I’m all yours.”

Love is all about commitment, which is why weddings are such a cause for celebration. It tells the world that ‘I put you and us ahead of just me.’

Mr. Van Dyke said something else that made our ears perk up:

“I think I’m one of those lucky people who got to do for a living what I would’ve done anyway.”
