How to Pick Music for Your Wedding

While there is no such thing as a "typical" wedding or reception. many couples have their reception follow a three-segment format, which you can use to simplify planning the music for your event.

Cocktail Hour is your first opportunity to establish the "feel" of your evening. If you want conversation and socializing to occur during this time, avoid loud or overbearing music. Selections of light rock or R&B work well here, as does light classical, instrumental, smooth jazz, and big band style jazz.

Dinner Hour often has music similar to the Cocktail Hour, as toasts, blessings, and other formalities occur while your guests dine and socialize. However, the music selection could certainly be changed to match the style of your dinner.

Party Time!!!
Using a good combination of fast and slow music invariably brings all age groups to the dance floor. Playing older styles of dance music at the beginning of the evening and more current music towards the end of the evening is usually a great way to keep your dance floor full. Older guests may leave early, while younger guests will stay and party until the very last song.

Starting this part of the evening with music your older older guests enjoy gives them the opportunity to dance, and often encourages them to stick around a bit longer. Younger guests, who are used to staying up and out late, will "tolerate" oldies, Motown and some 70's funk or disco (for example) as long as they know the DJ will be playing what they feel is "party" music a bit later in the evening.

For many receptions, the goal is to insure all your guests spend as much time as possible on the dance floor throughout the entire evening.

Our "Top 200 Songs," found on the website and in the brochure that we mail out, is a great place to start picking music and let us know which songs you'd like us to play (and which songs you'd like us to avoid playing). These 200 songs are proven winners that always get people on the dance floor. If you ask us to select the music for your event, these are the songs we'll pick from.

If you don't see your favorites in the Top 200 list, visit our Song List Database (which has over 70,000 song titles), and search for your selection there.

If your wedding has a theme, playing music that follows that theme will have your guests feeling more immersed in the evening. And it is not at all uncommon for couples to want their music to be more of a "background" style instead of a "dance party" atmosphere. Many couples fill their entire evening with songs that allow their guests to socialize instead of feeling like they're at the "dance party to end all parties."

Regardless of how you envision your evening's music, our Event Specialists and DJs have the experience, knowledge, and expertise to make it happen.
